We’re back!

See Tron Legacy in 3D Thursday Night for $1

December 14th, 2010

Thanks to the good folks at TechCrunch, you can avoid the $17 Manhattan movie ticket price if you want to catch a midnight screening of Tron: Legacy in 3D this Thursday. They’ve bought out an entire theater at Regal Cinemas Union Square and are letting people buy tickets by naming their own price.

Click HERE to snatch a ticket, which are somehow still available.

You can pay $1 if you want, but if you’re feeling generous, know that whatever you pay is a donation to the UCSF Children’s Hospital, so they’re asking for a suggested donation of $10.

Regal Union Square is at Broadway & 13th. Check in is at 11:15pm, screening at Midnight. This Thursday, 12/16.

10 New NYC Movie Openings, weekend of December 10-12

December 10th, 2010

Oscar movie release season is in full swing in New York! Here’s a complete rundown of what’s opening, where it’s playing in the city, and how it’s doing with critics:

1. THE TEMPEST

41 on MetaCritic

The best thing about Taymor’s Tempest is also the worst: It’s not stunning but it is sturdy, a handsome-enough showcase of a film that never really comes to life. It plays like a challenge politely declined. (AV Club)

Angelika in Greenwich Village: 11:15am  12:15  1:45  2:45  4:15  5:15  6:45  7:45  9:15  10:15  11:45pm

Lincoln Plaza on the UWS: 11:05am  1:20  3:40  6:00  8:20  10:35pm

2. THE TOURIST

43 on MetaCritic

Cinema-as-shoplifting is okay, as long as you still get the feeling it’s for a greater good. But that’s something The Tourist is sorely missing. (Washington Post)

Playing all over the city. NY showtimes here.

3. THE COMPANY MEN

68 on MetaCritic

The movie is realistic enough to make all corporate climbers, but especially men over 50, quake in their boots. If you are what you do, what are you if you’re no longer doing it? (S Holden, NY Times)

Loews Lincoln Square on the UWS: 10:25am 1:15 4:30 7:20 10:20pm 12:25am

4. THE FIGHTER

73 on MetaCritic

Russell has always excelled at finding new ways to use familiar actors, and every performance in The Fighter is noteworthy if not outstanding.

Loews Lincoln Center on the UWS: 10:30am 12:30 1:25 4:20 6:15 7:15 10:10pm 12:40am

5. AND EVERYTHING IS DOING FINE

80% on Rotten Tomatoes

Soderbergh imposes a shape until the film begins to feel less like puzzle pieces in search of their place and more like one seamless picture: with this collage of the artist’s past work, he’s created an entirely new final monologue for Gray. (NPR)

IFC Center in the West Village: 12:50 2:30 4:25 6:25 8:30 10:30pm

6. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER

54 on MetaCritic

Another mixed Narnian offering which, while it doesn’t bust through the series’ three-star ceiling, at least gives us its best FX, biggest monsters and finest child actor yet. (Empire)

Playing all over the city. NY showtimes here.

7. VENGEANCE

76 on MetaCritic

Mr. To certainly delivers bullets and bodies in “Vengeance.” Yet there are also pockets of calm here when he lingers over this group of men simply enjoying one another’s company, which suggests he might have been rewatching some late Howard Hawks. Mostly, both newcomers to Mr. To and longtime admirers should be prepared for a master class in directing. (M Dargis, NY Times)

IFC Center in the West Village: 4:30 9:55pm 12:05am

8. YOU WON’T SEE ME

63% on Rotten Tomatoes

For all its many irritations, You Wont Miss Me has undeniable punch, a frayed energy that feels janglingly unstable. (J Catsoulis, NY Times)

Cinema Village in Greenwich Village: 3:10 7:00 9:10pm

9. SAINT MISBEHAVIN: THE WAVY GRAVY MOVIE

71% on Rotten Tomatoes

Saint Misbehavin’: The Wavy Gravy Movie is a celebration and something of a scrapbook too, a collection of memories without much in the way of questions. (Popmatters)

IFC Center in the West Village: 11:30am 1:20 3:20 5:20 7:25 9:35pm

10. RABBIT A LA BERLIN (+ LOSS)

100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Cunningly fashioning found footage into a rabbit’s-eye view of events, Polish helmer Bartek Konopka creates a chillingly apt political allegory in Rabbit a la Berlin. (Variety)

Film Forum in the West Village: 1:00 2:45 4:30 6:15 8:00 10:00pm

Movies in a Subway Tunnel!

December 8th, 2010

The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel in Cobble Hill is officially the world’s oldest Subway tunnel. This weekend, Rooftop Films turns it into New York’s most badass place to watch movies.

If you wake up Saturday or Sunday morning feeling both adventurous and in the mood for a flick, this is for you. For these screenings, you “enter the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel via a ladder through a manhole in the middle of Atlantic Avenue. Traffic is blocked off, but you should definitely wear comfortable shoes and those who are incapable of climbing up and down a 10 feet ladder should not plan on attending the event.”

The screenings, which consist of 4 new short films, are at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday. After the 2-hour program, there will be an after party w/ complimentary drinks at local bar Last Exit. Advanced tickets for Saturday are sold out but you can still get some for Sunday online here.

Entrance to the tunnel is be at Atlantic Ave & Court St, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Come prepared to climb up and down that 10 foot ladder. The shorts being screened are below the jump.

Patrick Stewart introducing new “Macbeth” adaptation at BAM

December 7th, 2010

BBC Films is releasing a filmed adaptation of the highly acclaimed 2008 stage production of “Macbeth” that starred Patrick Stewart. Directed by Rupert Goold, this gloriously gory production took to the London stage in 2007 and came to BAM and then Broadway in 2008. The new film version arrives at BAM Cinematek on the 13th, with an introduction from Patrick Stewart himself.

BAM Cinematek is at 30 Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. $12 are tickets are onsale now here. 12/13/10 at 7pm.

There have been many fascist-themed versions of Macbeth over the years. What makes this one a must-see is Mr. Stewart’s thrilling recognition that his character is as close kin to the fatally introspective Hamlet as he is to power-wielding men of ill will like Richard III. His performance is the first I have seen to realize completely what the scholar Harold Bloom means when he calls this play ‘a tragedy of the imagination.

In “Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale,” Santa is like a scary Old Testament God who sees you when you’re sleeping/awake (opening today @ IFC Center)

December 3rd, 2010

If you’re someone who feels overwhelmed by all of the forced Christmas glee, this film might be your perfect pick-me-up. In “Rare Exports,” A young boy named Pietari living in a remote Finnish mountain village uncovers the truth about Santa Claus in a frightful, yet darkly humorous manner. Santa emerges as a malevolent and creepy boogeyman-type as he terrorizes the village. The concept is perfectly eerie and dark, much like the dark fantasty style of some 1980′s horror films. Reviews have been quite positive — it has a score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75 on Metacritic.

It’s likely the best anti-Christmas Christmas movie since Bad Santa. (Village Voice)

For grown-ups looking for an alternative to the annual onslaught of ho-ho-ho Christmas tales, the visually pleasing oddity is just the thing, even if it does slow down in its middle portion before picking up again. (NY Post)

Opening today at the IFC Center in the West Village.
