‘Megamind’ feels like something we’ve all seen before, and nobody seems to mind (opening today in wide release)

Films like “Megamind” point to a disappointing reality in Hollywood: we’re starting to run out of movie ideas. What it lacks in originality, though, it definitely makes up for with its crisp visuals and myriad of celebrity voices. Will Ferrell is in prime form as he voices the blue knucklehead super-villain around whom the film is centered. His distinct vocal range allows him to go over the top and give a manic performance as Megamind. Critics seem to welcome the film’s angle, which focuses on the antihero, much the same way “Despicable Me” did this summer. While it lacks the typical farcical qualities of modern animated films, “Megamind” should still appeal to the young, which ensures a big-time payout during its run. Reviews have been generally positive — it has a score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 64 on Metacritic.

This set-up is bright and amusing, even if it does feel recycled from bits and pieces of such recent animated landmarks as The Invincibles with its superpowers and Despicable Me with its villain. (Chicago Sun-Times)

Fast-paced but not frantic, goofily good-natured and attractively designed for widescreen 3D. (Hollywood Reporter)
