Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere”: The most divisive movie of 2010?
December 1st, 2010 by gothamfilm received Comments OffCoppola is back on terra firma with this intimate, often lyrical tale of father-daughter evolving bond, splendidly played by Dorff and Fanning and seductively shot by ace lenser Harris Savides. (Emanuel Levy)

Not that it’s anything new for a Sofia Coppola film to be divisive, but “Somewhere”, even before its release, seems to be bringing the debate back in full force. A few months ago it won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, but it’s also been pissing a lot of critics off. Some people have found themselves watching a beautiful, poetic and insightful indictment of L.A. celebrity lifestyle, while others see lots of slow, boring, directionless scenes of a movie star bringing his daughter around to swanky places. Which is to say, how you feel about “Somewhere” is probably going to have a lot to do with how you feel about “Lost in Translation.”
More choice quotes from critics below the jump. “Somewhere” opens in NYC on the 22nd.
