‘The Social Network’ is the third highest scoring movie ever on Metacritic (and opens in wide release today)
October 1st, 2010 by gothamfilm received 4 Comments »It’s a grandly entertaining reminder of everything we used to go to the movies for (and still can’t get online): sparkling dialogue, thorny situations, soulful performances, and an unusually open-ended and relevant engagement with a major social issue of the day: how we (dis)connect. (Time Out NY)
Reading the Metacritic page for The Social Network today is like reading a long list of press quotes organized by Sony Pictures. Everyone seems to love this movie. The “worst” review that Metacritic lists is a positive one from J Hoberman at the Village Voice (Rotten Tomatoes lists an actual negative review from, who else, professional contrarian Armond White). It is the 3rd best reviewed film in the site’s (10 year) history with an absurdly high 97. So is the movie worth all of this breathless praise, buzz, and hype?
In a word, yes.
The reviews will tell you that this is not only a fantastically entertaining and exhilarating film, but an encapsulation of the way social interaction changed over the past decade. It’s a film about two social groups, two social networks. The first is Zuckerberg’s Harvard group of friends and the second is Zuckerberg’s online creation — Thefacebook. This second social network gets destroyed by the first, and you could argue about which Social Network the film’s title refers to. (It’s both).
‘The Social Network’ opens in wide release today 10/1.
